Noor has one rule.

Don't let it hit the ground.

This applies to shuttlecocks, balloons, beach balls, and—according to Noor—possibly life in general.

She discovered badminton almost by accident. Someone handed her a racket. Someone else hit the shuttlecock toward her.

Noor swung.

Missed completely.

And immediately demanded another try.

That was pretty much the end of that.

Now there is a racket propped beside her bedroom door, another one mysteriously living in the back seat of the car, and a collection of battered shuttlecocks that Noor refuses to throw away because they still work.

Mostly.

She's quick, competitive, and utterly incapable of playing anything "just for fun."

Because fun, as Noor understands it, includes winning.

She practices serves until her arm gets tired. She counts how many times she can keep the shuttlecock in the air by herself. She challenges cousins, friends, siblings, adults who should know better...

And she celebrates every spectacular shot as though she has just won an Olympic gold medal.

But the thing Noor loves most isn't winning.

It's that tiny moment when the shuttlecock hangs impossibly high in the air.

Everyone looks up.

Nobody knows where it's going.

And Noor is already moving.

Someday, she'd like to play in a tournament where her name is announced before she walks onto the court.

She has already practiced waving to the crowd.

Obviously.

Her dream: To become a champion badminton player—and maybe represent Bahrain someday.

Her wonder: “How high can you go if you just keep hitting it back?”
