The first time Maya met a ferret, everyone else laughed.
"It looks like a furry noodle."

"It isn't even cuddly."
Maya picked him up anyway.
He wrapped himself around her arm, looked straight into her eyes, and promptly fell asleep.
That was that.
Since then, Maya has collected facts about animals the way some people collect stickers.
She knows which owls hunt at night.
Why beavers build dams.
How porcupines protect themselves.
Why ravens remember faces.
And why ferrets perform joyful little hops that people call the "weasel war dance."
She insists it's the happiest dance in the animal kingdom.
Whenever someone says an animal is scary, strange, or ugly, Maya wonders if perhaps no one has taken enough time to understand it.
She believes every creature has something fascinating to teach us.
Sometimes all they need is someone willing to look a little closer.
Someday Maya hopes to become a wildlife rehabilitator, helping injured animals return to the forests, rivers, and mountains they call home.
Because every wild heart deserves another chance.
