Mariam has always been good at noticing what needs her.
A thirsty plant.
A classmate sitting alone at lunch.
A bird hopping strangely across the garden.
And, apparently, one extremely spoiled kitten.
His name is Mishmish.
Mariam did not choose the name.
Her grandmother did.
Mariam wanted to call him Galileo.
She still believes Galileo was the superior choice.
Mishmish disagrees.
Every afternoon, he climbs into Mariam's lap as though arriving for an appointment. First comes brushing. Then ear scratches. Then a careful inspection of his paws, despite the fact that there has never once been anything wrong with them.
Mishmish considers this essential medical care.
Mariam considers him ridiculous.
She adores him.
Mariam uses a wheelchair, which means people sometimes make assumptions about what she can do before they've even met her.
Mariam finds this very strange.
There are hundreds of things she can do.
She can beat her brother at chess.
She can remember every constellation her grandfather has taught her.
She can make her mother laugh when she is trying very hard to stay annoyed.
And she can identify almost every neighborhood cat by name, temperament, and preferred snack.
Someday, Mariam wants to become a veterinarian.
Not because she thinks animals are helpless.
Quite the opposite.
She thinks animals are clever, stubborn, funny, complicated little souls who deserve someone willing to understand what they're trying to say.
She has already begun practicing.
Her first patient is currently asleep in her lap.
The appointment appears to be going very well.
Her dream: To become a veterinarian and care for animals who need someone to notice.
Her wonder: “What if kindness is its own kind of strength?”
