Lucía of Argentina — The Girl With a Very Long List

Age: 13
Country: Argentina

Her story:

Lucía has a list.

Actually, Lucía has several lists.

There is the list in the back of her notebook. The list taped beside her bed. The list on her phone. And the extremely important master list that nobody is allowed to touch because it contains stars, arrows, color coding, and a complicated ranking system that makes perfect sense to Lucía and absolutely no one else.

They are all lists of places she wants to see.

At thirteen, nearly fourteen, Lucía of Argentina has become completely fascinated by the enormous world beyond her own front door.

She wants to see everything.

She wants to stand somewhere she doesn't know the language and learn how to say thank you. She wants to ride trains through countries she's only seen on maps. She wants to taste food she cannot pronounce, hear music she's never heard before, and find out whether the moon looks any different from the other side of the world.

Her family has pointed out repeatedly that the moon will, in fact, still be the moon.

Lucía considers this unnecessarily negative.

For now, most of her traveling happens from her bedroom.

She reads about distant cities. Watches documentaries. Learns phrases in other languages and occasionally delivers them at dinner to an audience that did not request them.

And every few weeks, she stands in front of her mirror wearing her favorite World Tour shirt and tries to imagine herself older.

Braver.

Somewhere she has never been.

The funny thing is, Lucía already loves home.

She loves Argentina. She loves familiar voices from another room, favorite foods, inside jokes, and knowing exactly where she belongs.

Maybe that's why she isn't afraid to dream about leaving it for a while.

Home, she figures, isn't the place that keeps you from going.

It's the place that gives you somewhere to come back to.

Someday Lucía wants a passport filled with stamps, a camera filled with photographs, and enough stories that when someone asks where she's been, the answer takes a very long time.

But there's one thing she has already decided.

Argentina will always be both the beginning and the end of every journey.

Her dream: To travel the world, meet people whose lives are different from hers, and discover just how much they have in common.

Her wonder: “How many versions of me are waiting in places I haven't been yet?”
