Zahra has always loved numbers.

She loves that numbers have patterns. That a problem that looks impossible can become simple if you stay with it long enough. That there is an answer waiting somewhere, even when you cannot see it yet.

At twelve years old, Zahra of Afghanistan carries a mathematics book almost everywhere she goes.

She works through problems slowly, filling the margins of her notebook with calculations and little sketches of flowers. When she solves one that has frustrated her for days, she draws a tiny star beside it.

There are a lot of stars.

Zahra dreams of becoming an engineer.

She wants to understand how things are built—bridges and buildings, machines and cities—and someday, she wants to build things of her own. Her curiosity is enormous, and she has never understood why a dream should become smaller simply because the person dreaming it is a girl.

So she keeps learning.

She reads. She calculates. She asks questions. And when the world around her feels uncertain, Zahra returns to the reassuring language of numbers, where one discovery leads to another and every difficult problem begins with the same possibility:

Her flower crown is bright against her deep blue scarf, and tucked into one braid are tiny blossoms she chose herself—little sparks of color beside the serious girl who intends to understand everything she possibly can.
