Thalia of Cyprus — The Girl Who Laughs Before the Punchline

Age: 11
Country: Cyprus

Thalia has a terrible habit.

She laughs at jokes before they're finished.

She knows she shouldn't.

She tries not to.

But somewhere around the middle, she figures out where the joke is going, and that's it.

She's gone.

Her best friend insists this ruins everything.

Thalia insists it makes the joke twice as funny because then everyone starts laughing at her laughing.

This argument remains unresolved.

At eleven, Thalia has developed a reputation for finding amusement in places other people completely overlook.

A spoon falling off the table.

Her brother trying to whisper and accidentally snorting.

Someone confidently walking into the wrong classroom.

The very serious voice her father uses when he is pretending not to be annoyed.

Thalia collects these moments like other people collect souvenirs.

She also collects stories.

She reads constantly, running her fingertips across pages of Braille so quickly that her family sometimes asks how she can possibly be reading instead of just pretending.

Thalia considers this deeply insulting.

Then she reads the sentence aloud.

Usually with dramatic voices.

Especially if there is a villain.

Books have given Thalia thousands of places she has never seen and people she has never met. She loves adventure stories most—the kind with impossible journeys, clever girls, secret passages, and endings that make her wish there were fifty more pages.

Someday, Thalia wants to write stories of her own.

Not stories about a blind girl who does something remarkable.

Just remarkable stories that happen to have girls like her in them.

Girls who solve mysteries.

Girls who travel the world.

Girls who make mistakes, save the day, get completely ridiculous ideas and occasionally laugh before the punchline.

For now, though, Thalia has another chapter to finish.

And apparently something on this particular page is extremely funny.

Nobody else knows what it is yet.

Thalia is laughing too hard to tell them.

Her dream: To become a writer and create adventures where every child can find someone a little like themselves.

Her wonder: “How can a story show you a world you've never seen?”
