Every morning, before the sun climbs too high, Sreyneang carries a wooden bowl of grain into the yard.
She never has to call.
The chickens somehow know she's coming.
They hurry across the yard in a flutter of feathers, little feet racing through the dust. Some are bold enough to eat from her hand. Others pretend not to trust anyone until everyone else has gone first. Sreyneang knows every one of them.
She gave them all names.
The tiny white hen who always wanders away before breakfast.
The proud rooster who announces absolutely everything.
The clever brown hen who somehow discovers every hidden insect before the others.
Sometimes the flapping wings send dust swirling into the morning air. Sreyneang squeezes one eye shut, laughs, and keeps tossing handfuls of grain anyway.
She says it's simply part of breakfast.
She notices things.
Which hen isn't eating as much today.
Which chick finally learned to hop onto the feeding bowl.
Which eggs belong to which nest without needing to look twice.
Her grandfather says paying attention is its own kind of kindness.
Sreyneang thinks he's probably right.
Someday she dreams of becoming a veterinarian who helps both farm animals and family pets stay healthy.
Not because she wants a famous job.
Because every creature depends on someone.
And she likes being someone they can depend on.
