Age: 11 Region: Oceania
It started with one drink.
Mara was hot, thirsty, and bored while the adults prepared food for a family gathering. There was fruit everywhere, so she put some pineapple and mango into a cup, added a few strawberries, mashed everything together, and poured in something cold.
She tasted it.
It was excellent.
This was her first mistake.
Her older brother saw her drinking it.
“What’s that?”
“Mine.”
“Can you make me one?”
Mara should have said no.
Instead, she made him one.
This was her second mistake.
Her cousin wanted one next.
Then another cousin.
Then an aunt asked if Mara could make hers with extra pineapple.
Her brother came back.
“Can you make another one without so much mango?”
Mara stared at him.
“You liked the mango five minutes ago.”
“I changed my mind.”
Then someone wanted strawberries but no banana.
Someone else wanted extra banana but no coconut.
A cousin asked if Mara could make his sweeter.
An uncle suggested she add more ice.
Mara slowly stopped stirring.
She looked at the collection of people waiting for drinks.
Then she looked at the cup in her hand.
Somehow, in less than twenty minutes, Mara had gone from having a snack to operating a restaurant she had never agreed to open...
Her Dream: To own a little boat someday and spend entire afternoons exploring the water with absolutely nobody telling her where she needs to go next.
Her Wonder: Why people suddenly want something the minute they see somebody else enjoying it?
