There are three words Maarja hears rather frequently.
“Maarja, don’t.”
They are usually followed by something more specific.
Don’t climb that.
Don’t jump from there.
Don’t see how fast it goes.
And, on one particularly memorable afternoon:
“MAARJA, THAT HAS WHEELS.”
Maarja considers these statements less like instructions and more like useful information.
She isn't reckless.
At least, this is what Maarja tells everyone.
She simply believes there is an important difference between probably shouldn't and absolutely impossible.
And she likes to investigate the difference.
At ten, Maarja plays soccer with a seriousness completely unsupported by her personality.
Before a game, she is focused.
Determined.
Ready.
Approximately forty-five seconds later, she is yelling something at a teammate, laughing so hard she can barely run, and attempting a move she saw someone do in a video once.
It worked in the video.
This seems relevant.
Her mother has learned not to watch too closely.
Maarja's favorite position is wherever the ball currently happens to be.
Defense?
She's there.
Midfield?
Coming.
Goalkeeper?
MOVE, SHE'S GOT THIS.
Coach has explained positions.
Repeatedly.
Maarja remains unconvinced.
But there's something else about her.
When someone falls, Maarja is the first one there.
When the smallest girl on the team is afraid to take a penalty kick, Maarja stands beside her and says, “Just kick it as hard as you can. If it goes somewhere weird, we'll pretend you meant to.”
When they lose, she is disappointed for approximately seven minutes.
Then she wants a snack.
Maarja doesn't dream of trophies yet.
At ten, dreams are allowed to change before breakfast.
Her dream: To keep discovering everything she's capable of—even the things nobody expects.
