There is almost always someone sitting on Lana's bedroom floor.

This is partly because Lana has friends.

And partly because Lana owns exactly one chair, which is currently holding approximately seventeen pieces of clothing.

At fifteen, Lana's room has become unofficial headquarters for everything.

Homework.

Music.

Borrowed clothes.

Emergency conversations.

And, apparently, hair.

Lana learned to braid years ago and has since become the person everyone turns to before a party, a photograph, or any occasion involving the sentence, “Can you fix this?”

She can.

Usually.

But the braiding isn't really her favorite part.

It's what happens while she's doing it.

People talk when they're sitting still.

They tell Lana about the test they're worried about, the person they like, the argument they had with their mother, the thing they're excited about but afraid to say out loud.

Lana listens.

She doesn't always give advice. She's learned that sometimes people don't want answers.

Sometimes they just want somebody to say, “Yeah. I get it.”

Her friends tease her that she knows everybody's secrets.

Lana strongly objects to this.

She knows some of everybody's secrets.

There is a difference.

Someday, Lana thinks she'd like to do something that brings people together. Maybe she'll become a counselor, a teacher, or create a place where young people can come when they need someone in their corner.

She's not sure yet.

For now, there's room on the floor.

Someone will bring snacks.

Someone else will choose the music.

And sooner or later, somebody is going to hand Lana a hair tie and say:

“While I'm here...”

Lana will pretend to be annoyed.

Then she'll make room.

Her dream: To create a life where people always know they have somewhere—and someone—to turn to.

Her wonder: “Why is it sometimes easier to tell someone what's wrong when they're busy doing your hair?”
