Kaisa of Estonia — The Girl Who Notices What Everyone Else Misses
Kaisa of Estonia — The Girl Who Notices What Everyone Else Misses
Age: 15 Region: Europe
Kaisa keeps photographs of things other people would probably throw away.
A crooked street sign.
An empty chair beside a window.
A mitten someone left on a bus.
A woman laughing with her head thrown back.
The shadow of a bicycle against an old wall.
None of them look particularly important.
That's exactly why Kaisa keeps them.
She has been taking photographs since she was eleven, although in the beginning she wasn't very good at it.
There were approximately six hundred photographs of her shoes.
Several hundred of the family cat.
And one spectacular series featuring nothing but the inside of her coat pocket because she had forgotten the camera was still on.
She considers this her experimental period.
Now, at fifteen, Kaisa rarely photographs the thing everyone else is photographing.
When people turn toward the sunset, she turns around.
She wants to see what the light is doing to the buildings behind them.
When everyone gathers for a group picture, she sometimes takes one just before it—the moment when someone is fixing another person's hair, two friends are whispering, and nobody has remembered to smile for the camera yet....
Her dream: To become a documentary photographer and preserve the small, human stories that might otherwise disappear.
Her wonder: “How many important things happen while nobody is paying attention?”
