Inés of Cuba — The Girl Who Knows the Secret Ingredient
Inés of Cuba — The Girl Who Knows the Secret Ingredient
Age: 12
Country: Cuba
Inés knows exactly why her grandmother's cakes taste better than everyone else's.
Unfortunately, Abuela refuses to tell her.
Inés has asked.
Repeatedly.
“Is it more vanilla?”
No.
“Do you use a different kind of sugar?”
No.
“Is there something in that little jar on the top shelf?”
Absolutely not, and stop climbing on the chair.
So Inés has begun an investigation.
At twelve, she has become her grandmother's unofficial assistant in the kitchen. She measures, mixes, carries bowls to the sink, and has recently been promoted to decorating—which is how she discovered that sprinkles are much harder to control than they appear.
Abuela watches from nearby.
She rarely corrects her.
A crooked layer can be fixed. Too many sprinkles have never ruined anybody's day. And according to Abuela, a girl learns more from doing something herself than from having someone constantly reach over and do it for her.
Inés likes that.
She also likes the stories.
Because whenever they bake together, Abuela talks.
She tells Inés about people she knew when she was young. About celebrations and mistakes and family jokes so old nobody remembers how they started. About recipes learned from women who learned them from other women before them.
And slowly, Inés begins to suspect something.
Maybe the secret isn't hiding in a jar at all.
Someday, Inés wants to have a bakery of her own—a warm little place filled with cakes, music, laughter, and recipes carrying pieces of the people who came before her.
But first, she intends to master her grandmother's cake.
She's getting close.
Abuela says she still hasn't discovered the secret ingredient.
Inés thinks she has.
She's just decided not to tell her yet.
Her dream: To open a bakery filled with family recipes, stories, and traditions passed from one generation to the next.
Her wonder: “Can a recipe remember the people who made it before you?”
