Imani of the Congo — The Girl Who Fills Empty Pages
Imani of the Congo — The Girl Who Fills Empty Pages
Age: 8
Country: The Congo
Imani doesn't rush when she draws.
She begins with one careful line.
Then another.
Sometimes she stops halfway across the page and simply looks at it for a while, as though she's waiting for the picture to tell her what it wants to become.
People watching from the doorway think she's daydreaming.
She isn't.
She's listening.
Every evening, after homework is finished and the house grows quieter, Imani curls beneath her favorite blanket with a sketchbook balanced on her knees.
She fills its pages with dresses that seem to dance in the wind.
Little cottages with flower boxes beneath every window.
Birds that wear tiny crowns.
Girls who laugh with their eyes before they smile with their mouths.
Some pages hold only one flower.
Others overflow with entire worlds.
Her grandmother once told her,
"If you can imagine something clearly enough, you've already started building it."
Imani believed her immediately.
Now every blank page feels less like empty paper...
and more like tomorrow waiting patiently.
She keeps every sketchbook.
Not because she thinks every drawing is beautiful.
Some aren't.
Some are wonderfully crooked.
Some faces have one eye much larger than the other.
One cat somehow ended up with six tails.
She laughs every time she finds it.
She says mistakes deserve to stay because they remind you how much you've grown.
Someday Imani hopes to become an illustrator.
She wants to fill children's books with girls who look like the girls she knows.
Girls with curious eyes.
Messy curls.
Big dreams.
Girls who discover adventures hidden inside ordinary afternoons.
Because every child deserves to open a book and quietly whisper...
"She looks like me."
Her Dream
To become an illustrator whose stories help children see themselves as heroes.
Her Wonder
"How many worlds are hiding inside one blank page?"
