Eleni would like everyone to understand something.
His name is Theo.
He is not “the lamb.”
This distinction matters.
At fourteen, Eleni has spent enough time around animals to know that they have personalities every bit as complicated as people do.
Theo, for example, is stubborn.
He refuses bottles if the milk isn't warm enough, complains loudly when breakfast is late, and has somehow decided that Eleni's lap is an entirely reasonable place for a growing sheep to sit.
It is not.
Theo remains unconvinced.
Eleni has always been the one who notices when an animal isn't quite right.
A sheep hanging back from the others.
A dog favoring one paw.
A newborn that isn't eating enough.
She watches first. Then she asks questions.
Lots of questions.
Her family has learned that “Eleni is just checking something” can mean anything from five minutes to the rest of the afternoon.
She doesn't mind.
Animals can't explain where something hurts. They can't tell you they're frightened or that something feels wrong.
Someone has to pay attention.
And Eleni does.
She reads everything she can find about animal care and keeps a notebook filled with observations, questions, and a growing list titled:
THINGS I NEED TO ASK A VETERINARIAN.
It currently occupies several pages.
Someday, Eleni wants to become a veterinarian, especially one who works with farm animals. She wants to be the person who arrives when something is wrong and knows what to do.
For now, she has plenty of willing patients.
Particularly Theo.
Although Eleni suspects Theo's primary medical condition is being completely spoiled.
There appears to be no cure.
Her dream: To become a veterinarian and care for animals who cannot tell us what they need.
Her wonder: “If animals can't use words, how much can we learn just by paying attention?”
