Daniela of Cuba — The Girl Who Draws New Worlds
Daniela of Cuba — The Girl Who Draws New Worlds
Age: 13
Country: Cuba
Daniela has a problem.
She has more characters than she has stories to put them in.
At thirteen, her sketchbooks are crowded with them.
Girls with enormous eyes and impossible hair. Heroes with mysterious pasts. Best friends who know everything. Villains who Daniela insists are “misunderstood,” although her mother remains suspicious.
Daniela loves anime and manga, but watching and reading them isn't enough.
She wants to know how they're made.
So she draws.
And draws.
And draws some more.
Her earliest characters had hands permanently hidden behind their backs.
Hands, Daniela would like everyone to know, are ridiculously difficult.
But she kept practicing.
Now she studies expressions, movement, clothing, and all the tiny details that can tell you something about a character before they've said a single word.
Her favorite part is showing her newest drawings to her mother.
Her mother always looks carefully.
Never just a glance.
She asks who the character is.
What she's like.
What happens to her.
And suddenly Daniela isn't showing her mother a drawing anymore.
She's telling her a story.
That's when Daniela realized she doesn't only want to create beautiful characters.
She wants to create entire worlds for them.
Someday, she dreams of becoming an animator or graphic novelist, bringing her own characters to life in stories other kids can disappear into for a while.
For now, there are sketchbooks to fill, stories to invent, and approximately four hundred hairstyles Daniela hasn't tried yet.
And hands.
Unfortunately, there will always be hands.
Her dream: To become an animator or graphic novelist and create characters and worlds entirely her own.
Her wonder: “What if someone I draw today becomes somebody's favorite character someday?”
