Calista of Cuba — The Girl Who Has an Explanation

Calista of Cuba — The Girl Who Has an Explanation

Age: 15
Country: Cuba

Calista would like everyone to remain calm.

Yes, the eyeshadow is blue.

Very blue.

And yes, her mother specifically said, “Don't get into my makeup.”

But in Calista's defense, she wasn't getting into it.

She was experimenting.

Her mother, currently standing in the doorway, appears unconvinced by this distinction.

At fifteen, Calista loves trying on different versions of herself.

One day her hair is braided with flowers. The next she's rearranging everything in her closet because she's suddenly decided two things that “absolutely do not go together” might actually look fantastic together.

And then there's makeup.

Calista loves color—not because she thinks she needs it, but because she thinks faces are wonderfully interesting places to create.

Gold can make her feel glamorous.

Pink can make her feel playful.

Blue apparently makes her mother say:

“Calista .”

In that particular tone.

But underneath all the experimenting, Calista is figuring out something bigger.

Style can be a language...

Her dream: To build a creative career in fashion or beauty that helps people feel free to express themselves.

Her wonder: “How many different ways can you look like yourself?”
