Camila of Cuba — The Girl Who Has an Explanation
Camila of Cuba — The Girl Who Has an Explanation
Age: 15
Country: Cuba
Camila would like everyone to remain calm.
Yes, the eyeshadow is blue.
Very blue.
And yes, her mother specifically said, “Don't get into my makeup.”
But in Camila's defense, she wasn't getting into it.
She was experimenting.
Her mother, currently standing in the doorway, appears unconvinced by this distinction.
At fifteen, Camila loves trying on different versions of herself.
One day her hair is braided with flowers. The next she's rearranging everything in her closet because she's suddenly decided two things that “absolutely do not go together” might actually look fantastic together.
And then there's makeup.
Camila loves color—not because she thinks she needs it, but because she thinks faces are wonderfully interesting places to create.
Gold can make her feel glamorous.
Pink can make her feel playful.
Blue apparently makes her mother say:
“Camila.”
In that particular tone.
But underneath all the experimenting, Camila is figuring out something bigger.
Style can be a language.
The things we wear, create, paint, braid, and choose can tell the world something about us before we've said a word.
Someday, Camila would love to work in fashion or beauty, creating looks that help people express who they are rather than telling them who they're supposed to be.
She doesn't know exactly what that career looks like yet.
She's fifteen.
There is time.
At the moment, however, Camila has a more immediate problem.
Her mother is still standing in the doorway.
And Camila is going to need a much better explanation for why the blue eyeshadow appears to have migrated from her eyelids to the bathroom counter.
Her dream: To build a creative career in fashion or beauty that helps people feel free to express themselves.
Her wonder: “How many different ways can you look like yourself?”
