Anika knows exactly how long it takes for a seed to become something worth waiting for.

At least, usually.

Some seeds apparently have their own schedules.

She finds this irritating.

Behind her family's home, Anika has claimed a small patch of earth as her garden. It began with a few flowers planted beside her grandmother, who taught her how to press a fingertip into the soil, tuck a seed inside, and resist the overwhelming urge to dig it back up the following morning to see whether anything was happening.

Anika was seven.

Patience was not yet among her talents.

Four years later, her garden has become a glorious experiment.

She saves seeds in little folded envelopes and writes notes on them. She knows which corner gets the first morning sun, which plants tolerate heavy rain, and which flowers will dramatically collapse if they go one afternoon without water.

She talks to those.

Not because she believes flowers can hear her.

Probably.

Her favorite is the water lily.

Bangladesh's national flower grows across ponds and waterways, opening above the water as though it has decided that whatever lies beneath the surface isn't going to keep it from finding the sun.

Anika likes that.

She likes growing things, but what fascinates her most is why they grow.

Why does one plant flourish while another struggles?

Could crops grow with less water?

Could gardens help keep soil cooler?

Could someone create plants better able to survive floods, heat, or changing weather?

Her grandmother occasionally reminds her that she is supposed to be tending the garden, not conducting an agricultural research institute.

Anika sees no reason she cannot do both.

Someday, she wants to become a botanist.

She imagines greenhouses filled with experiments, notebooks covered in observations, and discoveries that might help farmers grow food in places where growing anything has become difficult.

For now, though, there is today's bouquet.

She carries it inside for her grandmother.

Because some beautiful things are worth studying.

And some are simply meant to be given away.

Her dream: To become a botanist and discover new ways to help plants—and people—thrive.

Her wonder: “What might grow if someone simply gives it a chance?”
