Amara of Côte d’Ivoire — The Girl Who Paints What She Feels
Amara of Côte d’Ivoire — The Girl Who Paints What She Feels
Age: 12
Country: Côte d’Ivoire
Amara has paint on nearly everything she owns.
Her shirts.
Her shoes.
Her desk.
Once, somehow, the back of her ear.
She still doesn't know how that happened.
At fifteen, Amara can lose an entire afternoon in front of a canvas. She begins with an idea, changes her mind halfway through, paints over something she loved ten minutes earlier, and occasionally announces that the entire thing is terrible.
Then she keeps painting.
That's important.
Because Amara has learned that making something beautiful doesn't always feel beautiful while you're making it.
Sometimes it's messy.
Sometimes the color is wrong.
Sometimes the picture in her head absolutely refuses to cooperate with the picture on the canvas.
But then there are the moments when it does.
A streak of gold suddenly becomes sunlight. A shadow gives a face its expression. Two colors she wasn't sure belonged together become her favorite part of the painting.
Those moments feel a little like magic.
Amara paints the things she notices—faces, flowers, crowded streets, quiet rooms, the changing colors of evening. But lately she's been trying to paint things that can't actually be seen.
Joy.
Loneliness.
Hope.
The feeling of missing someone.
She isn't always sure how.
That's why she loves trying.
Someday, Amara wants to become an artist and create work that makes people stop for a moment—not because they recognize exactly what she's painted, but because they recognize something they feel.
For now, she'll keep experimenting, changing her mind, ruining perfectly good shirts, and discovering what happens when she refuses to give up on a canvas.
Even when the canvas is being extremely uncooperative.
Her dream: To become an artist whose paintings help people see—and feel—the world differently.
Her wonder: “Can you paint a feeling even if it doesn't have a color?”
