Ama of Ghana — The Girl Who Asks One More Question
Ama of Ghana — The Girl Who Asks One More Question
Age: 12 Region: Africa
Ama asks a lot of questions.
Actually, according to her family, Ama asks one question too many.
She disagrees.
How can there possibly be too many questions when there are still so many things nobody has explained properly?
Why do some fabrics stay bright for generations?
How does a merchant remember the price of everything in her stall?
Why does her grandmother know exactly when rain is coming without looking at a weather app?
And why, if everyone keeps telling Ama that curiosity is a good thing, do they occasionally say,
"Ama. Please. Just eat your breakfast."
At twelve, Ama loves wandering through the market with her family. She notices everything—the colors, the conversations, the women bargaining across stalls, the patterns in cloth, and the stories tucked into ordinary things.
But what interests her most are the people.
Ama likes asking older relatives about what life was like when they were young. She wants to know where their families came from, what their grandparents taught them, which traditions survived, and which stories nearly disappeared.
She has started writing them down.
Her notebook is becoming part family history, part collection of questions, and part evidence that Ama intends to understand absolutely everything eventually.
Her grandmother says this could take awhile.
Ama says she's twelve. She has time.
Someday, she wants to travel—not because she wants to leave home behind, but because she wants to understand how people all over the world carry home with them.
She thinks knowing where you come from doesn't make your world smaller.
It gives you somewhere to begin.
And tomorrow, Ama has another question for her grandmother.
Possibly seven.
Her Dream: To travel the world collecting stories while preserving the history of her own family.
Her Wonder: “How many stories disappear simply because nobody thought to ask?”
