Riya can smell rain coming.

Riya has chosen to ignore them.

When the first heavy drops begin to fall, Riya doesn't run inside.

She runs out.

Shoes abandoned somewhere behind her. Hair soaked within minutes. Face tipped toward the sky and hands stretched upward as though she intends to catch every drop before it reaches the ground.

Her mother calls from the doorway.

Riya promises she'll come inside.

Eventually.

She loves the way rain changes everything.

Dust disappears. Leaves become impossibly green. Puddles appear where there were none. Water drums against rooftops, runs along streets, gathers in fields and ponds—and suddenly the entire world sounds different.

But Riya has noticed something else.

Sometimes there is too little rain.

Sometimes there is far too much.

And she wants to know why.

Her fascination began with a glass jar she placed outside to measure rainfall for a school project. One jar became several. Then came a thermometer. A notebook. Charts. Weather reports.

And a homemade rain gauge that her father says is occupying prime garden real estate.

Riya checks it every morning.

She records temperatures, rainfall and cloud cover. She has learned about monsoons and rivers, cyclones and changing climates. She wants to understand why storms form, how scientists predict them, and how communities can prepare before dangerous weather arrives.

Someday, Riya wants to become a meteorologist.

Not because she wants to stand on television pointing at clouds.

Although she admits that looks fun.

She wants to study weather because weather matters—to farmers waiting for rain, families living near rivers, fishermen watching the sky, and children wondering whether tomorrow will bring sunshine...

or the glorious possibility of puddles.

And when the first drops begin falling?

The future meteorologist closes her notebook.

Runs outside.

Throws her hands toward the sky.

And conducts additional research.

Barefoot.

Her dream: To become a meteorologist and help communities understand and prepare for the weather that shapes their lives.

Her wonder: “How can something falling from the sky change an entire world?”
