Sunday dinner has always followed certain rules.

Her father carves whatever is being served. Her mother insists everyone eat something green. Her grandfather tells at least one story everyone has already heard.

And Inês comes for dinner.

Inês has been Leonor's best friend for so long that neither girl remembers becoming friends. Their mothers say it happened when they were four.

Leonor thinks they were probably born that way.

“Then give me back my grapes.”

“No.”

Once, Leonor licked a strawberry before Inês could take it.

Inês ate it anyway.
