Nima of Nepal — The Girl Who Goes Somewhere Else
Nima of Nepal — The Girl Who Goes Somewhere Else
Age: 10 Region: Asia
Nima is very good at waiting.
At least, that is what adults think.
She can sit quietly while grown-ups have conversations that seem to last several years. She can wait through long bus rides, delayed appointments, and visits where everyone says, “Just five more minutes,” when they clearly have no idea how long five minutes actually is.
Nima rarely complains.
She simply goes somewhere else.
That is usually when Tashi appears.
Tashi is a red panda.
He is also completely imaginary.
Nima knows this.
Tashi does not.
In Tashi's opinion, he is a highly skilled explorer whose talents are constantly being wasted because Nima keeps getting them into trouble.
Once, during a particularly long bus ride, Nima and Tashi discovered a hidden valley beyond the mountains.
They crossed a frozen river.
They followed enormous footprints through the snow.
They found a cave filled with crystals that glowed in the dark.
Tashi wanted to go home.
Nima wanted to see what was at the back of the cave.
Tashi reminded her that this was exactly how they had nearly been eaten by a dragon the week before.
There had not actually been a dragon...
Her Dream: To write books filled with places that don't exist yet, so other children can go somewhere else whenever they need an adventure.
Her Wonder: Where imaginary friends go when the children who invented them grow up?
