Luciana of Nicaragua — The Girl Who Jumps In
Age: 10 Region: Central America
Luciana has a rule about water.
If she's close enough to wonder whether she should get in, she should probably already be in.
Pools.
Lakes.
Rivers.
The ocean.
If there's water and an adult has confirmed that nobody is going to be eaten by anything, Luciana is interested.
She loves swimming.
But this was not always true.
When Luciana was six, she was afraid to put her face underwater.
Not mildly afraid.
Absolutely, positively, NO THANK YOU afraid.
Her swimming teacher tried everything.
“Just blow bubbles.”
No.
“Hold my hands.”
No.
“Would you like goggles?”
Still no.
Then one afternoon Luciana watched another little girl jump into the pool.
The girl came up laughing.
Luciana stared at her.
She hadn't transformed into a fish.
She hadn't disappeared into the mysterious depths.
She had simply jumped...
Her Dream: To become a swimming instructor and help frightened children discover how brave they can be.
Her Wonder: How many wonderful things are waiting just beyond the places where fear tells us to stop?
