Lucía of Honduras — The Girl Who Argued With the Wind

Lucía of Honduras — The Girl Who Argued With the Wind

Age: 7     Region: South America

Lucía has been trying to fly her kite for twenty-three minutes.

She knows this because she asked her father how long they had been there.

“About twenty minutes.”

“That is too long.”

“For what?”

“For the wind to start cooperating.”

Her father looks toward the trees.

The branches are moving.

Flags are fluttering.

Several other kites are already in the air.

“The wind appears to be cooperating with everyone else.”

Lucía gives him a look.

This is not useful information.

Her kite is yellow and blue.

She chose it herself.

She helped tie the string.

She carried it all the way to the field.

And now the stupid thing refuses to fly...

Her Dream: Lucía dreams of building things that can fly.

Her Wonder: “How can something invisible be strong enough to lift something into the sky?”
