Liyah of Namibia — The Girl Who Saved the Best Bite

Liyah of Namibia — The Girl Who Saved the Best Bite

Age: 6     Country: Namibia

Liyah always saves the best bite for last.

Everybody knows this.

If there are strawberries, she saves the biggest one.

If there are potatoes, she saves the crispiest.

And if there is ice cream, Liyah carefully eats around whatever part has the most caramel.

This requires concentration.

Liyah takes dessert very seriously.

One afternoon, she was sitting with a bowl of her favorite ice cream when her cousin came into the room.

He had been outside playing.

He was hot.

He was tired.

And, most importantly, he had no ice cream.

He sat beside Liyah.

“That looks good.”

Liyah nodded.

It was.

He watched her take another bite.

“Really good.”

Liyah moved her bowl slightly farther away.

Her cousin sighed.

Liyah knew exactly what was happening.

She also knew there was only one really perfect bite left.

Caramel.

Ice cream.

A little crunchy piece.

She had been saving it.

Her cousin looked at the bowl.

Liyah looked at her cousin.

Then she looked back at the bowl.

This was a difficult moment.

Finally, Liyah scooped up the perfect bite.

She held out the spoon.

Her cousin's eyes got enormous.

“For me?”

Her Dream: To own a bakery where she can make beautiful treats and always save something sweet for someone who needs cheering up.

Her Wonder: How can giving away something I wanted make me feel like I got something better?
