Ligaya of the Philippines — The Girl Who Keeps Everything

Ligaya of the Philippines — The Girl Who Keeps Everything

Age: 12     Region: Oceania

Ligaya is twelve years old, and according to her mother, she has a problem.

According to Ligaya, her mother has a problem.

Her mother keeps trying to throw away important things.

Like the faded yellow ribbon in Ligaya’s desk drawer.

“It’s a piece of ribbon,” Mama says.

It is not.

It came wrapped around the first birthday present Ligaya’s best friend bought for her with her own money.

Then there is the tiny pink shell on her windowsill.

“You have twenty shells.”

But this is the shell Ligaya found the afternoon her father finally taught her to float. She had been terrified of taking her feet off the bottom. Papa held his hand beneath her back until, little by little, he wasn't holding her at all.

Ligaya keeps movie tickets, pressed flowers, birthday cards, pretty stones, notes folded into impossibly tiny squares, and one absolutely hideous plastic ring her little brother won from a machine.

The ring is bright green.

It does not fit.

Ligaya treasures it...

Her Dream: To travel the world and come home with one tiny thing from every place she visits—not something expensive, just something that will help her remember exactly how it felt to be there.

Her Wonder: How something can be worthless to everyone else and priceless to one person?
