Lia did not choose Bento.
This is important.
Because if you ask Lia how she got her dog, she will immediately correct you.
“I didn't get him. He got me.”
Bento appeared one afternoon near the gate outside Lia's home.
He was small.
Dirty.
Ridiculously fluffy.
And apparently operating under the assumption that he already lived there.
Lia crouched down.
“Hello.”
Bento walked directly to her, climbed onto her lap and fell asleep.
That was it.
No interview.
No references.
No discussion with the adults.
Bento had made his decision.
Lia's mother was considerably less certain.
“We don't know where he came from.”
Bento wagged his tail.
“He might belong to someone.”
Bento rolled onto his back.
“We cannot just keep a dog because he decided to sit on you.”
Bento licked Lia's chin.
Lia said nothing.
She understood that negotiations were proceeding extremely well without her.
They searched for Bento's family.
They asked neighbors.
They posted his picture.
They waited.
Nobody came.
Meanwhile, Bento settled in...
