Lia did not choose Bento.

This is important.

Because if you ask Lia how she got her dog, she will immediately correct you.

“I didn't get him. He got me.”

Bento appeared one afternoon near the gate outside Lia's home.

He was small.

Dirty.

Ridiculously fluffy.

And apparently operating under the assumption that he already lived there.

Lia crouched down.

“Hello.”

Bento walked directly to her, climbed onto her lap and fell asleep.

That was it.

No interview.

No references.

No discussion with the adults.

Bento had made his decision...

Her Dream: Lia isn't sure yet. At nine, she thinks that's perfectly reasonable. For now, she wants a life filled with people and animals she loves—and she intends to be the kind of person who stays when someone needs her.

Her Wonder: "How many times can we choose someone before they finally understand they belong?"
