Imani of Rwanda — The Girl Who Chases Herself

Imani of Rwanda — The Girl Who Chases Herself

Age: 11     Region: African Continent

Imani remembers the first race she ever ran.

Mostly because she didn't win it.

She didn't come in last either. She finished somewhere in the middle, breathing so hard she could barely speak.

Her coach expected her to ask who had won.

Instead, Imani asked, “What was my time?”

He told her.

Imani stood with her hands on her knees, catching her breath.

“Okay,” she said. “How do I beat that?”

Her coach looked at her for a moment.

Then he smiled.

That was the beginning.

Imani started keeping her times in a little notebook.

She didn't write much else.

12:14.

Next time:

12:06.

Then:

11:58.

Eight seconds.

Another eight seconds.

Imani loved those eight seconds.

They belonged entirely to her...

Her Dream: To keep running long enough to discover just how fast she can become.

Her Wonder: How you can lose a race and still become better than you were before?
