Haben of Eritrea -- The Girl Who Wonders What Things Remember

Haben of Eritrea -- The Girl Who Wonders What Things Remember

Age: 13     Region: African Continent

Haben's grandmother keeps a wooden box in the back of her wardrobe.

Everyone in the family knows about it.

Almost nobody knows what's inside.

Haben does.

There are old earrings with one stone missing. A silver chain so tangled that threedifferent people have tried to untangle it and given up. A tiny brass key that doesn'tseem to open anything. Two coins. A bracelet that belonged to Haben's great-grandmother.

And one green bead.

The green bead is Haben's favorite.

Not because it is particularly beautiful.

Because nobody knows where it came from.

"Maybe it fell off a necklace," her brother suggested.

"Which necklace?"

"I don't know."

"Then how do you know?"

Her brother stared at her.

"You ask too many questions."

Haben doesn't think she asks very many questions at all.

She simply doesn't stop thinking about them.

She is quieter than most of her family. At gatherings, while everyone else is talking over one another, Haben is usually listening.

She notices that her aunt twists her ring when she's worried.

That her grandfather always tells the same story differently.

That her little cousin secretly gives half his bread to the dog.

That her mother hums when she's happy but doesn't realize she's doing it.

People sometimes mistake quietness for shyness.

Haben isn't shy...

Her Dream: To become an archaeologist and uncover the stories hidden in ordinary things.

Her Wonder: “How much can one tiny object tell us about someone who lived long before us?”
