Freja of Denmark — The Girl Who Always Makes Room

Age: 14
Country: Denmark

Freja was very clear about the rules.

The puppy would sleep in his own bed.

He would not be fed from the table.

He would absolutely not be allowed on the sofa.

His name is Pelle.

Pelle sleeps in Freja's bed.

He has sampled nearly everything the family has eaten this week.

And yesterday, Freja's father discovered him asleep in the middle of the sofa with his head on a decorative pillow.

Freja maintains that none of this is technically her fault.

Pelle is persuasive.

At fourteen, Freja has a habit of making room for things.

People, mostly.

And apparently puppies.

She's the friend who notices when somebody is standing slightly outside the circle. The one who scoots over without making a big deal about it.

Sit here.

At school, she remembers who hates eating alone.

At home, she notices when her younger cousin has become overwhelmed by all the adults talking and quietly takes her somewhere calmer.

If someone new joins the group, Freja is usually the first person to learn their name.

She doesn't think of this as kindness.

She just knows what it feels like when somebody makes space for you.

And what it feels like when nobody does.

Her favorite place is home in the evening when everyone has finally stopped rushing somewhere.

Shoes by the door.

Something warm to eat.

Someone telling a story they've already told three times.

Pelle wandering from person to person investigating the possibility that dinner may accidentally fall directly into his mouth.

Freja loves that feeling.

Not the house itself.

The belonging.

Someday, she wants to create places where people can find that feeling even when they're far from home. Maybe she'll design welcoming spaces. Maybe she'll own a little guesthouse. Maybe she'll do something she hasn't even imagined yet.

She's fourteen.

There is time.

But whatever she does, Freja already knows one thing.

There will always be another chair.

Another plate.

Another place at the table.

And, apparently, room in the bed for one extremely spoiled dog.

Although she would like it formally recorded that Pelle was supposed to sleep in his own bed.

Pelle declines to comment.

He's busy licking her face.

Her dream: To create places where people feel welcomed, comfortable, and completely at home.

Her wonder: “What turns an ordinary place into somewhere you feel you belong?”
