Her Story
Mali has never met a story she didn't want to hear.
At eleven years old, she is the girl who sits closest when someone begins with, “When I was little…” She wants every detail. What happened next? Who was there? Was it funny? Was it scary? And—most importantly—is there another one?
Mali knows that stories can do something wonderful: they can carry people across years and distances. They can make someone you've never met feel familiar. They can make you laugh about something that happened long before you were born.
And they can help us remember.
She loves listening to the people around her tell stories of family, childhood, community, and the places they know and love. Later, Mali fills notebooks with stories of her own—some true, some imagined, and some so wonderfully ridiculous that even she starts laughing before she reaches the ending.
Someday, she dreams of becoming a writer.
She wants to fill books with characters who are brave and mischievous, curious and complicated. She wants children to open her stories and discover lives different from their own—and somehow recognize a little of themselves there, too.
For now, Mali listens.
Because she has already discovered something important:
Before you can tell a wonderful story, you have to learn how to hear one.
Her dream: To become a writer and share stories that help children understand one another.
Her wonder: “How many stories are waiting for someone to listen?”
