Her story:

Aria hears music in places other people don't.

The click-click-click of her mother's shoes across the kitchen floor.

Rain tapping against the window.

A spoon circling the inside of a teacup.

Even the washing machine has a rhythm, although Aria insists it has absolutely terrible timing.

At eight years old, Aria of Albania has been picking out melodies on a keyboard for as long as anyone can remember.

Before she knew the names of the notes, she knew how they felt.

Some sounded like sunshine.

Some sounded like missing someone.

And some made her fingers move so quickly that she would finish a song, look down at her hands, and wonder how on earth they had done that.

Aria loves playing songs she already knows, but what she loves most is inventing ones nobody has heard before.

She gives all of them titles.

There is The Song for a Cat Who Refuses to Come Inside.

The Pancake Disaster.

And a very dramatic composition called Everyone Is Annoying Me Today, which she performs with considerably more enthusiasm than her family thinks necessary.

But there is one song Aria hasn't named yet.

She has been working on it for months, adding a few notes whenever they come to her. Sometimes it's joyful. Sometimes quiet. Sometimes she plays the same little melody over and over because she knows something belongs there but hasn't found it yet.

Her family asks what the song is about.

Aria just smiles.

“I don't know. It isn't finished being itself yet.”

Someday she wants to become a composer and write music for movies, orchestras, and perhaps one enormous concert where thousands of people hear something that once existed only inside her head.

For now, though, eight-year-old Aria is perfectly happy at her keyboard, flower crown tangled into her hair, discovering what happens when one note finds the next.

Because Aria believes every person carries a song somewhere inside them.

You just have to get quiet enough to hear it.

Her dream: To become a composer and write music that makes people feel stories even when no words are spoken.

Her wonder: “Maybe music is what feelings sound like.”
