Eastern Europe is a region shaped by crossroads.

Across broad plains, mountain valleys, forests, rivers, medieval towns, and modern cities are countries with distinct languages, traditions, histories, and identities—neighbors whose stories have intertwined for centuries while remaining unmistakably their own.

It is a place where old and new live comfortably beside one another.

A grandmother's recipe may be made in a modern apartment. Folk songs share playlists with pop music. Ancient streets lead to science classrooms, dance studios, football fields, libraries, cafés, and homes filled with the wonderfully ordinary commotion of family life.

And growing up among all of it are girls with stories of their own.

They are readers and athletes, artists and inventors. They climb trees, learn instruments, tease their siblings, adore their pets, make best friends, change their minds, ask difficult questions, and dream about lives that may carry them across the world—or keep them wonderfully close to home.

Eastern Europe has known extraordinary beauty, enormous change, and periods of profound hardship. Those histories matter. But they are not the entirety of the region, and they are certainly not the entirety of its children.

Girls Wear Crowns celebrates the girls beyond the headlines.

Each portrait tells an original story inspired by the rich diversity of the region—not intended to represent every culture, community, or lived experience.

Because a country's history may help shape a girl.

But she gets to imagine what comes next.
