Builds Worlds

Age: 12
Country: Belarus

Katya was supposed to be playing the game.

Instead, she redesigned the village.

This happens a lot.

Give Katya a world made of blocks and within twenty minutes she has moved the houses, added a bridge, planted trees, widened the paths, built a library nobody asked for, and decided the villagers desperately need a public square.

They do.

Obviously.

Katya loves games, but winning has never interested her nearly as much as making.

She wants to know how everything works.

How does pressing one key make something happen somewhere else on the screen?

Who decided what the sky should look like?

How does a game remember where she put her house?

And—most importantly—could she make one herself?

So Katya started learning to code.

At first, almost nothing worked.

Her character walked backward.

A door disappeared.

She created a tiny game in which the player was supposed to collect stars, except the stars couldn't actually be collected.

For three days, Katya argued with those stars.

The stars eventually lost.

Now there's a notebook beside her computer filled with sketches of characters, maps, scraps of code, ridiculous game titles, and ideas she thinks of when she is supposed to be sleeping.

Her favorite idea is a game where players travel through imaginary countries solving mysteries, learning languages, collecting stories, and building something beautiful in every place they visit.

There will be no fighting.

There will, however, be dragons.

Katya feels this is a reasonable compromise.

Someday she wants to become a game designer and programmer, creating worlds other children can enter and explore—worlds where curiosity matters more than winning and nobody is told there is only one way to play.

But tonight, she's back in her blocky little village.

The library needs another floor.

The bridge is too narrow.

And somebody has put a chicken inside her house.

Again.

Katya sighs.

Apparently even a future software engineer has limits to her authority.

Her dream: To become a game designer and programmer and build worlds where imagination has no
